ORIGINAL, part of the “Enchanted Portal” series which explores introspection during the 2020 COVID-19 time of isolation.  I was thinking of the desire to record the self, the selfie as an art form and starring in and creating one's own private world. They will all have the presence of a mirror, and a phone in the drawing, with the mirror acting as a portal.

In this piece, I was thinking of the story of Sleeping Beauty and what kind of self-portrait Aurora might take. The composition was informed by the large mirrors that go over closet doors, and reflect the room, and in this case, Sleeping Beauty's resting place. I included the misty backdrop of a castle shrouded in overgrowth of 100 years. I like to think this is a few moments after Aurora woke up, perhaps after 100 years the prince who woke her gave her a new iphone and she is trying it out in a unique self-portrait. The setting of the place doesn't really make sense, but I felt that seemed appropriate in that the fairy tale is rather unbelievable as well--all that mattered to me was that the feeling of the fairy tale came through.
